How To Clean and Maintain PVC Windows, Doors And Conservatories

Although the grained foiled finishes are available on the interior as well, customers would generally opt for white UPVC interiors as they are easier to clean and give a much cleaner feel to the home.

The foils can come in a few finishes such as Oak, Mahogany, Rosewood and now in bespoke colours which are new to the market. Colours ranging from Irish oak, rustic cherry and even various shades of grey, reds and blues.

Depending on which sort of finish the customer chooses there will be a different way that you should treat the window frame when cleaning. But the maintenance of the product concerning functioning parts and general rules will stay the same no matter what PVC products are fitted.

The age of the windows may affect the aesthetics also, as customers were having PVC fitted up to 18 years ago. The PVC part of the window and door should still be able to be brought back as good as near to new as possible with the right products.

Although there are a few tips on bringing old windows back to life, it’s important to realise that the performance of the glass wont be anywhere near as effective as the new heat efficient windows and doors being fitted at the moment. There is also the problem of malfunctions on working parts such as handles and locking systems that need maintaining on at least 3 to 6 month periods to provide you with less problems.

General cleaning.

First open the windows and you will see a channel revealed where the hinges and locking keeps sit. Use a small brush and loosen the dirt, then take a vacuum cleaner to suck out the loose dirt.

Understanding Mobile Phones

Benefits of Fixed Mobile Convergence

There are three types of savings an organisation can make from a convergent solution: call costs, infrastructure and productivity.

Savings delivered through convergence

Although call cost savings are the easiest to measure, they provide the least scale for savings. More benefits can be derived through infrastructure efficiencies and productivity.

Infrastructure savings are delivered through fixed-line replacement strategies and green field site deployments. This impacts the CAPEX and ongoing OPEX requirements of owning a fixed and mobile fleet.

Productivity and improved business processes, whilst providing the greatest opportunity for organisations to derive benefits from convergence, are also the hardest to quantify. For example, while a converged voicemail solution may save an employee five minutes of effort a day, the real benefit may not directly be derived through having an extra five minutes for ‘productive’ work. The benefits may, in fact, be delivered through customer satisfaction and repeat business as a result of improved response times. However, most businesses now measure customer satisfaction as a key performance indicator. Therefore, the increase in productivity and potential process re-engineering which can be achieved will have a positive impact on customer satisfaction levels.

Benefits include

  • Extending fixed line call features to mobile handsets
  • Reducing call costs
  • Improving the responsiveness of the business
  • Delivering control – for instance, for compliance with FSA regulations
  • Reducing duplication
  • Ease of extending capacity
  • Improving productivity

The use of converged solutions also enables the workforce to be more productive through functions such as mobile access to direct dial extensions and conferencing. Employees are able to respond faster to voicemails, and benefit from reduced telephone tag as they are able to answer more calls first time. Specific productivity gains are illustrated by the following examples:

    • Consultants within a Healthcare Consultingcompany achieved a 10 to 15% productivity gain as a result of reduced telephone tag.

    • Carers at a Home Care Servicescompany achieved time savings of 60 minutes each day per employee due to fewer voicemails, more calls answered first time and reduced telephone tag.

    • A specialist call centre within a Travel Insurancecompany handled 25% more calls as a direct result of increased responsiveness of staff.

    • Universityachieved one hour time saving per day for IT support staff, minimising delays in reaching colleagues to issue job instructions or resolve issues.

  • Within a Hospital, nurses were able to save at least 10 minutes each time they retrieved patient results, by being able to access and check results irrespective of location within the hospital.

Productivity benefits can be relatively difficult to quantify and are best addressed on an individual basis. However, financial savings can be found by calculating, for example, the number of minutes saved per day through enhanced communications and business processes (e.g. time wasted unnecessarily visiting office to pick up desk based voicemails or job schedules). In addition, the ability to rapidly and consistently answer enquiries and client calls can ensure that a client is gained and maintained owing to a better standard of service.

Although more difficult to measure, research has shown that softer benefits can lead to quantifiable revenue, customer satisfaction, customer retention, and work rate or cost saving improvements for enterprises.

One simple solution is a feature rich Business SIM enabling Voice, SMS & Data 3G and HSDPA whilst roaming. This mobile SIM provides the business with full control over calls and texts, both nationally on the hosted network and whilst Roaming. In addition, the SIM provides connectivity to defined private mobile networks and access to a common core for application activation.

The mobile is enhanced by providing short code dialling to other extensions in the business and support for the same feature dialling provided on fixed line handsets, enhancing application integration.

Number Portability

The MNO or MVNO provides for number portability and ensures that users can maintain their existing phone numbers and avoids any disruption to the dialling experience for the end user; no user training is required.

Data Support.

Idealy the network fully supports data options providing internet and mail connections. Access Point Names ( APNs) are provided for network supported applications such as Push-to-Talk (PTT

Subscribers naturally expect the same service capabilities when travelling abroad as they do when registered onto their home network. We aim to avoid complicated methods to make a call while ensuring subscribers can use their account when roaming internationally. Ideally, they want to be able to dial straight from their mobile contacts list without having to edit numbers in order to specify the correct country code.

CAMEL Customised Applications for Mobile network Enhanced Logic support means that, as long as the international network supports CAMEL, the user dials as normal. When CAMEL is supported, we can guarantee a seamless prepaid roaming experience. Costs are, typically, less than normal call rates and this solution ensures call recording as required for FSA compliance is still delivered while travelling in CAMEL countries.

CAMEL Call Back This solutions means that the caller makes a call as normal and the call is directed to the platform. The call then drops for a short period. The platform then immediately rings back both the caller and the destination number and connects the two parties. This solution is CAMEL dependent and ensures a lower call rate but it also incurs a slightly longer connection time.

Roaming will enable connection even when no CAMEL network is available. The call is made over the local macro network selected for the strongest network signal in the area. Call charges are at the standard country rates. This solution guarantees connection but will not ensure call recording within FSA regulations and will, potentially, incur the highest call rate.

Landline Number in the SIM

The SIMs can support both mobile and landline numbers which enables a mobile phone to host both a standard landline DDI (number) and a mobile number simultaneously.

Choice of Handset

It will support a wide range of handset models and, since it is independent of Smartphone operating systems, it is unaffected by operating system changes.

Short Code Dialling

As a result of the call routing presentation at the PBX or hosted data centre switch, short code dialling and feature dialling (i.e. number tagging to request a feature or application support such as record/don’t record or identification of private calls), are supported.

Cost Saving

Removing Business Costs Mobile phone software applications raise a number of management, cost and support issues for business. Furthermore, it is possible for mobile applications to be bypassed, even if this requires the mobile phone to be rebooted. All applications are delivered and supported centrally from the core; there is no need for support on the individual handsets, all that is needed is a New SIM card.

Savings on Mobile Costs

The outbound call leg is under the control of the business and will, typically, be configured to avoid Mobile Network Operator (MNO) charges for national and international calls. Calls, at the discretion of the business, may be placed:

  • FOC over internal, national and international business networks if they remain on-net or at land line contract rates for off-net calls over PSTN or the business’s chosen carrier
  • Inbound calls to mobiles are presented at the PBX and receive a share of the Media Termination Credits (a credit to the SIM) paid to the Mobile Network

In addition this can provide significant savings, in excess of 70%, on international roaming charges. This is provided by:

  • Use of professional mobile operator Call Back
  • Reduced costs as the outbound call leg is under the control of business

Application Integration from the Core

Will route all calls and messages (SMS) to a common core for switching. This common core may also route calls or messages to or through an application platform which, in turn, will activate the required service for that call or message. This enables Fixed and Mobile calls and messaging to use a common applications platform and, for the first time, ensures that the business requirements are met without requiring applications on mobile phones.

Third Party Business Applications

The common core provides a rich capacity for application integration. The ability to dial short codes will enable an integrated application to be activated with the dialled digits feeding the application, avoiding the need for the user to enter additional digits. For example, a time registration for, say, Time and Attendance or flex time recording or for security staff arriving at a location might dial a number which indicates the application and the location – the Calling line ID can identify the caller – all completed in one call.

Writing a Newspaper Article – News Article Writing Guidelines

There are certain guidelines that every journalist should follow when writing news stories. If the process is done correctly, the journalist will effectively entertain and educate readers from all walks of life.

Here are the guidelines that need to be followed:

1. The lead paragraph of your article should provide concise and clear overview of the main points that your readers need to know. In here, it’s a must that you answer the why, how, where, when, who, and what questions of your audience. Make sure that your readers will fully understand the gist of your content even if they choose not to read the rest of your article. Remember, these people are pressed for time and they usually read articles from start to finish.

2. Stick with facts. Your articles should always be unbiased, balanced, and completely fact-based. You must clearly cite the sources of your information and they must be integrated into your content.

3. Keep it simple. All the sentences that you use must be concise, clear, and worded in such a way that they are appropriate for your target audience. It’s important that you use simple terms all throughout or those words that your readers can easily identify with.

4. Keep it short. As I said a while ago, the audience you’re serving are usually pressed for time. So, do them a favor by making your article short and to the point. Do not use lengthy introductions and by all means, do not beat around the bush. Deliver the information that you’ve gathered upfront. Your readers will surely appreciate you for doing so.

New World Order, Old World News

One of the earliest conspiracy theories and perhaps the granddaddy of them all is the New World Order also known as the One World Government. Its proponents claim that groups like the Freemansons and the Builderbergs use influential and powerful people to change the world. They create entities like the Trilateral Commission and a virtual alphabet soup of acronyms. The UN, the EU, the IMF, the WTO and a half dozen other organizations are supposed pawns in the scheme to subjugate the world through war, intimidation, jingoism and trampling on human rights for the benefit of a select few at the top of the secret hierarchy of world rulers.

This is very contradictory to how many of us are conditioned to think about the new world order. Utopian science fiction stories present the New World Order as a good thing. After enough conflict and chaos, write many sci-fi authors, humans realize that they will accomplish far more together than apart and the entire species binds together to work as a finely tuned machine. War ends. Poverty is stamped out. Hundreds of diseases that thrive in slums and poor rural areas go extinct. Crime rates plunge. R&D and manufacturing surge as humanity builds its new cities and a fleet of spacecraft designed to travel in deep space, answering our most existential questions. The One World Government of sci-fi literature is a powerful tool for good and the next stage of our social evolution. It’s a mechanism that emerges when we overcome tribalism and nationalism to start thinking of ourselves as humans first and foremost. So why is the New World Order of conspiracy theories so downright evil?

Believe it or not, it has to do with its origins in Biblical literature and the infamous Leo Taxil Hoax. To properly tell the story, we need to start with a French tabloid journalist Marie Joseph Gabriel Antoine Jogand-Pages. Unwilling to write all that, he adopted the pen name Leo Taxil and used his writings to lash out at the Catholic Church for which he had little love. In late 19th century Europe, the Freemasons were treated with a great deal of animosity because the countries’ elites pinned the responsibility for the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolution on the elite gentlemen’s club that evolved from a stone masons union which often worked on churches financed by the Knights Templar. Some popes said that the Masons were Satanic because they didn’t care for the authority of the Vatican and leaned towards Deism.

Taxil decided to play a trick on the Catholic animosity towards the Freemasons and concocted the character of a woman named Diana Vaughan in a book about Satanism. Vaughan was supposedly involved with the Masons to such an extent that she knew many of their innermost secrets. She met incarnate demons summoned by Masons during their black masses. She saw a secret factory in the arctic where anti-Church and pro-Satan propaganda was being printed for all the world to see. The lodge masters talked to her about their plan to unite the world under a “pure Luciferian doctrine.” As bizarre and outlandish as those claims were, the Pope Leo XIII gave them credence and promoted them as warnings about Satanists in the midst of good, God-fearing people.

Before writing the book, Taxil underwent a public conversion to Catholicism and swore to repair the damage to the faith he did with the tabloids about popes and their indulgences he had written prior. His books were seen as a genuine investigative work. With the existing disdain for everything Masonic, people wanted to believe. Knowingly or not, Taxil’s Devil in the Nineteenth Century played on two lines of Revelations 13 from which the concept of the anti-Christ arose.

13:7 – And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
13:8 – And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Finally, Taxil assembled an audience of thousands including high church officials to introduce Diana Vaughan to the world. Instead he alone came up to the stage and announced that he’s taken all who were gathered for a ride, sharing his amazement that so many people could fall for claims this wild and thanking the church for giving him so much promotion and credibility. With that, he bowed and left the stunned audience.

But his hoax didn’t die. In fundamentalist religious circles, it still remains seen as proof that there are nefarious groups who want to unite the world and summon Satan to rule over all of humanity. As new clubs and societies were created for wealthy and influential people to meet, talk in private and share ideas, they were lumped with the Freemasons and their agenda was immediately assumed to be sinister. This is a part of why many archconservatives fear a New World Order. Conspiracy theorists of recent times have taken this fear and spun it to include governments they didn’t trust, corporations they didn’t like and alien rumors by which they were fascinated.

Applying For A Travel Document With The Form I 131

There are many a times when we are required to take a quick trip outside the United States for personal or emergency reasons. It is of great importance that all our paperwork related to our travel is in place. This way we will not face any trouble while coming back in. Let’s now check what needs to be done to ensure an exit and safe return to the United States.

If you plan to take a trip outside the United States of America for more than year but less than two years in duration, then a re-entry permit will be required for getting readmitted. To apply for a re-entry permit you should file Form I 131.

Form I 131 can be used by those people who are green card holders. The form I 131 is primarily used by permanent residents who are required to be in the U.S. when filing it and must appear for the bio-metric appointment before they can embark on their trip.

The form I 131 is used to request for a travel document. The application for advance parole may be filed concurrently with the form I 485. The application for advance parole may also be filed at a time when the form I 485 is pending. The application for advance parole can be filed at the same service center as the form I 485. As a general rule, applicants who have lived in the U.S for more than 180 days without legal status cannot apply for Advance Parole as they will be ineligible to reenter the United States for either three or ten years even with an Advance Parole Document.

It is best if the applicant waits till his form I 131 application is approved before departing the United States of America. The processing time may vary but it generally ranges from three to six months. The travel document filed with Form I 131 is valid for one year and can be renewed.

The Form I 131 can also be prepared to apply for a refugee travel document. This application should be made in the United States. However, if you are a refugee, you can depart the U.S before the application is approved and may pick up the travel document at a United States Consulate or DHS office overseas. As an alternative, the applicant can also remain in the United States till the application is approved and then pick the travel document from a consulate or DHS office overseas. The processing time for a refugee travel document varies but it generally ranges from three to six months and is valid for one year. To qualify for an a Refugee Travel Document the applicant must be holding a refugee or asylee status and the general rule is that the applicant cannot file for a refugee travel document to travel to a country were he might fear persecution.

The re-entry permits are generally valid for two years and are not renewable. However the applicant may return to the United States to file for another permit. The general thumb rule is that the green card holder can spend almost six years outside the United States and retain a re-entry permit. Longer absence would require an application for Special Immigrant.

How to Create Good Web Design

There are many different types of web design, from those built using website templates and ‘build your own’ site building applications to complex content managed and e-commerce web designs such as those used by big brand names like Amazon, eBay and Tesco. Some companies, even some big name companies, have unprofessional looking and badly designed websites. Some have amazing looking websites but because of their high graphical content and minimal text content can take an age to load, are not user friendly and do not provide what the visitor wants.

Good Website Design

Though many aspects of website design differ from site to site, many things remain the same throughout the majority of websites on the internet. Most notably is the navigation or menu. The way in which a website’s menu works and looks is very important, as ultimately, visitors to a website are looking for certain criteria that will make them either stay and interact or leave. This ability for a website to keep visitors interested is sometimes referred to as stickiness. Visitors want an attractive visually exciting experience, but perhaps more importantly, they want ‘ease of use’. Website usability is a key factor for websites that want their visitors to stick around, make an enquiry and ultimately complete a transaction and order a product or service.

Easy to Use Web Design

Internet users tend to prefer easy to use websites, because they do not want to have to learn how to use a website every time they find a new one. They should be able to use a website after only a few seconds of looking around a homepage, any more and they will leave and browse elsewhere. The need for fast user interaction is vital and therefore having a fast loading website is also important for a website to succeed. Even with faster internet connections such as broadband, internet users don’t want to wait around.

Just imagine, if you go to a shop on the high street and are totally ignored by shop assistants at the counter for 5 minutes, even after you have made it clear you want help. There is a correlation here to how an internet user may feel, when they arrive at a website that has been poorly designed, is difficult to use, unfriendly and slow to load. Making sure that a website has been well thought out and designed with the user in mind, displays a company’s unique selling points within easily recognizable eye catching calls for action and has a clear, easy to use menu is key to its success.

Flash Web Design

With recent web design advancements, such as the introduction of Flash animation and high definition video content, impressive websites have been produced to take advantage of much higher levels of visual effects and interaction. However with this ‘high end’ web design, comes a price, more often than not, web designs which rely heavily upon Flash content are often ridiculously slow to load. They often have a progress bar, which slowly goes across the web browser to signify when the website will finish loading.

This is much like the progress bars that you may be familiar with if you use video editing or 3D rendering software, or if you use games consoles where they are displayed whilst you wait for games to load. Internet users on the whole do not want to wait 3 – 5 minutes for a web page to load even if it does feature high resolution images, animation or video. They want fast informative content rich websites. If they wanted to watch an animation or video they would watch TV.

Good Flash Web Design

This is not to say that Flash animation is all bad news and shouldn’t be used in web design. If used subtly and in small amounts it can make a website more visually appealing without slowing the load time down too much. Suitable uses for Flash animation in web design are things such as; Flash banner advertisements, Flash video and interactive Flash forms for online questionnaires or business presentations.

Using Flash for a whole website design however, is not such a good idea. It slows the user’s experience down because they have to wait for elements of it to load. Also, sites totally developed in Flash tend to use unfamiliar menu structures and features. This can confuse visitors who just want to quickly interact with the website and not be amazed by the way the menu animates. Just because you can do these things in Flash, it doesn’t mean they have any real working value in the real world. They may look pretty, but if they are not functional and only irritate the visitor then they have no real value.

Flash Web Design & SEO

Another argument against using Flash to create a whole website is that it dramatically reduces the effectiveness of your websites’ Search Engine Optimisation. Flash web designs are made up of one main file within a web page which search engines find difficult to index. This is because the text within them is usually graphical text and therefore is not usually accessible by search engines. Some recent developments allow some text to be displayed for search engines in Flash websites, but this is nowhere near as effective as text content within traditional HTML based websites.

Don’t Write Off Flash in Web Design

Although Flash does have its limitations it also has its good points if used correctly. For instance; Flash animation is usually smaller in file size than traditional gif animation and because of the way it is made the animation flows smoother than gif animation too. Having said this, I would recommend only using Flash in small areas within a site to compliment other imagery that makes up the overall design. Finding a balance between minimal graphical elements, imagery, Flash and good quality informative text is the key to a successful user friendly website. This isn’t to say that web design needs be boring. By working with quality web design companies there’s no reason why you couldn’t have a visually exciting, well designed, easy to use and successful website.

Visually Stimulating Web Design

When visitors first arrive at a website, they want to be impressed and engaged with what the website has to offer. This will be determined by the ways in which the web designer has laid out the website’s content text, images and features. Arranging elements such as imagery, text, graphics, flash and video in such a way as to keep the visitor interested in the website is the key to good web design. If a website has poor design and doesn’t grab the attention of the visitor in the first few seconds, then it may well be dismissed as just another average website. This ultimately means the visitor will go elsewhere to spend their time and, more importantly, money.

Good Web Design Layout

A lot of time and money is spent making sure that the right elements of websites are positioned in the right places. Companies spend large amounts of money conducting research into how internet users use their websites. This type of research shows where their visitors’ eyes concentrate the most, which elements of the website they click on first and generally how they interact and use their websites. Most internet users will look primarily from the top left either across the page, or down the left hand side of the web page through an internet browser via a computer, mobile phone or TV set.

I would hazard a guess, that they are looking for the company’s name or logo, their main selling points or slogans and then what the website has to offer in terms of what is featured in the menu. After which their eyes are probably drawn across the page content and over to the right hand side. Successful web design usually takes this into consideration and will ultimately affect the way a website looks.

There are of course rather famous exceptions to this rule for instance one rather well known search engine has a web design which is quite different. The main focus and core functionality in their web design is located right in the centre of the page. This however, isn’t any ordinary website with tens or even hundreds of pages of products and services to display, its main focus is its recognisable logo and of course its search box. It does however feature a small minimal menu across the top of the web design, which flows from left to right. So even they have taken onboard some of the research undertaken into internet users’ habits. If you go looking at websites after reading this article, I can guarantee that most of the web designs you’ll see, will have a left hand menu and a defined header bar with a company logo and slogan across it.

The Upturn of Influencer Marketing in The Digital Domain

Influence is subtle yet powerful and this quote by TemitOpe Ibrahim does make us understand the potential of it: “Influence is when you are not the one talking and yet your words fill the room; when you are absent and yet your presence is felt everywhere.” Well, business does not work on strategies alone, in fact, business runs on the science of marketing and advertising too. Today, the face of marketing has made the world more open to opportunities, however, the latest concept that business runs on is influencer marketing as the archaic methods of marketing are not delivering what they used to deliver earlier in terms of audience attraction and profit maximization. Also, we live in an era where people have more faith on self-help gurus, experts, and buyers who provide genuine feedback that is why people now value advice from third parties and influencers whether micro or macro depending on the dynamism of the business.

Various studies have shown that many business houses, whether startups or multinationals have increased their budget for marketing and are mainly focusing on the power of ‘influencer marketing’. Since, ages we have seen cricketers and actors influencing the mass audience by endorsing various brands. Well, this is one perfect example of influencer marketing because as an audience, we tend to buy a product that is recommended to us by someone who is the face of the country and we have seen, otherwise, we know, there is no synergy between a cricketer and a toothpaste brand.

Why Does Your Business Need Influencers?

Any business works well when word-of-mouth is a part of it. In our daily lives also, recommendations play a great deal. Imagine yourself buying a product or a service online by just reading the reviews mentioned by some random people whom you don’t even know. Well, mostly, we don’t fall for it even if the product and services are great in reality. On the other hand, when the same piece of information comes from a reliable source then our brain automatically tends to believe it and gives a positive feedback if the influence is strong.

Hence, an influencer is the connecting thread between the targeted mass audience and a particular brand.

Influencers are great traffic generators, if influencers are ensuring to enlighten your brand amongst audiences then you ought to have a landing page as all this traffic will directly land to your website in order to generate good revenue.

However, now the smart customers do not fall for archaic marketing done via commercials or billboards, in fact, people now do all the research themselves and want to hear an honest feedback from someone they know and share a connection with and this is a major reason why various startups and multinationals are doing influencer marketing on various digital platforms.

Why Audience Matter?

Doing marketing on a larger scale has its own pitfalls if distinctions are not made. As a company, you must know what topics, blogs, and hashtags will your targeted audience follow and then play the influencer marketing card.

Every brand needs a different influencer marketing strategy as attracting the audience varies from brand to brand and if the influencer strategies are not distinctive then the end result will not be productive. Triggering the area of interest in the individuals will automatically let them follow you, share, or purchase your product or services.

How Influencer Marketing Works?

Specify Your Audience:
The first step to influencer marketing is identifying the online audience. Once that is done, understand the science behind their decision making, what impacts them the most, and what is the unique buying factor that they consider the most.

Think of An Apt Influencer:
After figuring out what the audiences need and how their decision making power works, implant a human magnet that attracts their needs in the right manner. If the buyers’ decision-making power is not what is being targeted then the purpose of influencer marketing is not being fulfilled at all.

Track Influencers and Their Activities:
By tracking your influencers you get to know a lot about the activities they do to attract the audience. Always listen to the advice of your influencers. Watch them carefully; figure out what topics do they focus on, how and what do they share with the targeted audience, and how do they respond to the queries of the targeted mass audience?

Blogging – Everyone Else Is Doing It

The Internet and the software which has been developed to run on it have made it extremely easy for anyone to publish content and have it accessible to millions of people. In effect, consumers have been given a voice to air their views to a massive audience. Something which before the Internet, they could never have done.

In recent years one of the biggest examples of this has been the massive growth of weblogs (blogs), wiki’s, podcasts, vlogs and moblogs – together they form what is loosely known as social media; the ability for anyone to publish almost any content without the typical costs and hindrances associated with traditional media.

This new publishing freedom has resulted in an explosion of new content. However the term social media, or citizen journalism as it is sometimes called, may be a misnomer as many companies can do it as well!

What is Blogging?

Blogging is currently the most common form of social media, in fact as of October 2006, about 100 000 new weblogs are being created each day – that’s more than the number of books published in the US each year!

The word blog is derived from the term “weblog” which was coined by Jorn Barger in 1997. We started using blog over weblog when Peter Merholz broke the word weblog into the phrase “we blog” in the sidebar of his weblog in 1999.

A blog is essentially a website typically driven by a content management system which features articles (blog posts) and comments on the blog posts. They come in all shapes and forms – from personal diaries shared with friends and family, to arms of political campaigns, media programs and updates on current affairs. They also range in scale from the writings of one blogger, to the collaboration of a large community of writers.

The world of blogs, bloggers and blog posts is commonly known as the blogosphere which has evolved rapidly since its inception. Blogs have given consumers and companies a voice and blogging has opened up a world of information sharing possibilities.

Blogs are not a fad that will lose popularity any time soon – they are here to stay and companies who want to be taken seriously by their consumers need to consider the benefits of starting a corporate blog or at the very least listen to what is being said about them in the blogosphere.

Blogging and RSS

Pioneered by Dave Winer, RSS (Really Simple Syndication) has taken blogging to a whole new level. An RSS feed is an XML (eXtensible Markup Language) file automatically generated by a blog or indeed almost any website or Internet service. Users are then able to “syndicate” or subscribe to this feed using a feed reader or aggregator. When a new post is available, the reader fetches its contents and puts the headings and usually some or all of the content of the post into your reader or directly onto another blog. When a blog is updated, its RSS feed is as well so information spreads very quickly and automatically.

In layman’s terms, RSS eliminates the need for the user to constantly check a site or blog to see if it has been updated. Their feedreader automatically does this for them and presents fresh information as it becomes available. This means that a user can constantly monitor potentially hundreds or even thousands of blogs and websites without having to spend the time visiting each one to check for fresh content.
Some examples of feed readers include FeedDemon, Newsgator and RSS Bandit.

Understanding the subject of blogging is made far easier when one immerses oneself in it, so set up a feed reader and get to it. You’ll soon lose yourself in this fascinating world of content sharing and strong opinions.

Better Blogging

By October 2006, Technorati, a blog tracking engine, registered 57 Million blogs tracked. They also acknowledged a consistent pattern whereby the number of blogs doubles every 236 days. However despite the massive growth of blogs, most do not make it past 3 months. According to Technorati, only 55 percent of bloggers are still posting 3 months after starting the blog with very few in comparison updating their blogs weekly or more.

Whether one is starting a blog for personal or corporate marketing purposes, there is no guarantee that anyone will ever find it. In order to ensure a blog’s success it needs to be marketed. Here is a list of suggestions on how to go about doing so:

Search engine optimisation: By ensuring that your blog is search engine friendly, search engines can be a major source of traffic. It is important that your chosen keywords are used in your blog headings, content and meta tags and that the search engines are able to spider all aspects of your blog.

Comments and trackbacks: By treating the blogosphere as a series of ongoing conversations and actively being a part of these conversations through comments and trackbacks, other bloggers will get to know you, link to your blog and a gradual stream of visitors will result.

List your blog in blog directories: Similar to search engines, directories are human edited and managed. Although the traffic volume is not as massive as search engines, many users do visit directories and this could be a great place for them to find out about your blog.

Ping web services with your updated content: Sites like ping-o-matic and FeedShark offer a service whereby they ping multiple web services, blog directories and search engines to let them know that your blog has fresh content.

Content – know your audience: Your blog posts must be interesting and useful to your readers. Develop your unique voice and don’t be afraid to post things others will not agree with.

Frequency: The regularity of posts is important, as there is a direct correlation to blog repeat visitors and the number of times it’s updated. Post 3-5 times per week at a minimum. Web sites and blogs that are updated often get spidered by Google more frequently.

A Holistic Approach

Blogging works in synergy with other eMarketing services, once again proving that a holistic approach is vital to ensure success on the World Wide Web.

Blogs and SEO

You’ve heard it a million times… Content is king! Because search engines love fresh, relevant content, blogs are a great way to give them exactly this. Essentially by writing one post a day, a blog allows you to add a fresh page of content to your website each day. The nature of blogs also makes them an excellent source of links to your website. Provided your content is engaging, other bloggers will link to it and search engines view these links as popularity votes thereby assisting in improving your rankings.

It is important however that the blog is set up to be as search engine friendly as possible. Start by ensuring that all blog posts are assigned a unique page which is easily indexable by the search engines. This can be achieved by ensuring that each page has a link to it which the search engines can find and follow. Pages must be tagged with keywords relevant to your SEO strategy. This means putting important keywords in your post headings, page URL and meta tags, particularly the title tag.

Blogs and Viral Marketing

In a similar vein to blogs being used as a natural link attraction tool, they can be extremely useful as a viral component to your online marketing strategy.

With valuable and engaging content, people will begin talking about and linking to your site. The blogosphere is an interconnected environment and as a result items which are interesting or remarkable are talked about and shared amongst bloggers. Over time this interest brings eyeballs to your site and ultimately awareness to your brand.

It’s Not Always Happy Day’s and Sunshine

Although word of mouth can have a tremendously positive impact on a brand, it can also cause immense damage. One of the best examples of the blogosphere influencing brands negatively is the now infamous “Dell Hell” scenario.

It all started when blogger, Jeff Jarvis had a terrible customer experience with Dell Computers. In true blogger style he documented his experience on his blog and word quickly spread to the point where it was even covered in print by Business Week. However Dell failed to respond to his musings and the bad customer experiences continued as did the negative comments on the blogosphere. Jeff’s rantings become known as Dell Hell and a recent scientific study by showed first that Dell has sustained long-term damage to its brand image and secondly that the cheerleaders for the poor reputation of Dell’s customer services, are bloggers.

With blogs wielding this level of power, it is critical that brands understand how to manage their reputation online and if necessary take proactive steps to limit the damage which can be caused by negative word of mouth. Online Reputation Management is something all companies need to be considering.

On a final note, a great thing to remember about blogs is that a blog is simply a method of publishing content on the Web. Calling something a blog now is a focus on the technology used on the server, the content management solution. Of course, there’s a significant culture that’s grown around this particular technology, but that culture is bound to remain a subculture. Not because the number of people who are involved in blogging is going to shrink but rather because the number of people reading content published using Movable Type, Blogger, or any of the other tools is going to grow. Fast.

Shoe Selection Secrets for the Die-Hard Track Athlete

The proper shoes are important in all sports, but especially in track and field. If your sport is a track and field event, it’s imperative that you wear the right shoe. They’re the most critical piece of equipment you can buy. Do like the pros do and spend some time finding the most appropriate shoe for your feet. Don’t let yourself be overly influenced by how good the shoes look; it’s more important that they’re right for your particular track event and your feet. Shoes that seem more fashionable are rarely the best choice, so this should be well down on your list of reasons to buy a pair of shoes.

This doesn’t mean that an unattractive shoe is automatically the best choice, however. Now that you know how important it is to choose the right shoe you also need to know what to look for. Bear in mind that shoes used on a track are completely different from shoes used for road or trail running. A track is a nice flat surface without obstacles (unless you’re running hurdles), while running anywhere else will cause you to deal with uneven grounds, slick surfaces, and objects to get over or around.

The wrong shoes, shoes not appropriate for your sport, or shoes that don’t fit properly will put you at risk for injury. Running shoes must be appropriate for the surface you’ll be running on, or you’ll be wasting your money.

The first thing you need to know before deciding on a new track shoe is which way your feet roll when they touch the ground. The may roll toward the outside or inside of your foot; you can determine which describes your running style by examining the soles of the shoes you’re currently wearing. Under-pronating is caused by wearing out on the outside first; over-pronating, obviously, causes more wear on the inside of the shoe. If you can’t tell if you’re an under- or over-pronator from the wear on your current shoes, have someone who runs with you watch your feet as you run. Ask them to run behind you so they can tell how your feet hit the ground. You have to know what kind of pronator you are before you can begin looking for new track shoes.

Once you’ve determined what type of pronator you are you’ll be on the right track for finding the proper running shoe. If your shoes are worn evenly across the soles, you’re a neutral pronator and you need a well-balanced, flexible shoe. A well-cushioned shoe is necessary for an under-pronator, while a heavy shoe will give needed stability to a moderate over-pronator. Motion control training shoes are required if you’re a severe over-pronator (let’s hope that’s not you!).

After determining what type of pronator you are and you know what kind of running you’ll be doing, it’s time to start trying on shoes. Put both shoes on, lace them up, and take a couple of steps with a running motion. If they feel right and you’ve already determined they’re the right shoe for your circumstances, your search is over.

The proper type of shoe is paramount in any track and field endeavor. Always search for the shoe that’s best for your foot. It must offer protection for your foot based on the type of running you do. And naturally, make sure the shoe fits properly and allows you to compete all day in comfort.
